Read the word list

A hard hangman word isn't an obscure one. Losing to a word you have never heard of feels like a trick, but losing to pug, yacht or jinx feels fair, because the answer was in front of you all along. Every word on this list is one a nine-year-old and an adult both know: animals, foods, everyday things and lively words like fizzy, wobbly and goofy. We picked them by hand, with no names, no office words and nothing anyone would need to look up.

Then our solver played every one, counting the wrong guesses a careful player makes. We kept the words that cost it at least five misses, plus three that cost four: kiwi, wasp and yummy. The toughest, fizzy, guppy and pug, cost eleven. Most of the list costs six or more, which is a lost round in a standard six-guess game.

Three things make a familiar word hard. Rare letters: z, j, x, k, v and y are the last letters most players try, so jinx and fuzz hold out to the end. Few vowels: pug, spy and fizz have one vowel or none, so a player who opens with vowels collects misses straight away. And crowded patterns: once _UG appears, it could be bug, hug, jug, mug, rug or tug, and every wrong pick costs a guess. Length helps the guesser, which is why most of these words are short. The very top scorers, such as fox, zoo and buzz, are on the hardest list instead, and no word here repeats on the good or easy lists.

60 entries. Our solver needed 7.3 wrong guesses on average: 0 easy, 3 medium and 57 hard. The toughest is fizzy (11 misses), the quickest kiwi (4).

How to use this list

Use this list once a group wins most rounds on the good hangman words. Every word is fair, so a lost round ends with a groan rather than an argument, and the short ones are quick to write on a board. For a younger or mixed group, allow eight wrong guesses instead of six: the words stay tough but become winnable.

When you are the one guessing, save the rare letters for last. Guess Z while _I__Y could still be silly, dirty or misty and you waste a turn; guess it once S, L, T and the other common letters have missed and it may be the only letter left that fits. The strategy guide goes through the habit in more detail.
